A typical object-verb activity might look something like this:

LESSON: Using sticky notes, post three to five nouns at various locations in the classroom. Visual imagery—magazine pictures, stuffed animals, or stickers—may be attached to the noun examples. Invite students to identify as many corresponding verbs as possible for each noun provided. For example, a clipping of a scientist excavating a fossil might generate: search (ing), dig, look, think, brush, walk, label, study, name, write/record, travel, talk, save/preserve, protect, carry, store. Allow students the opportunity to share their thoughts with other learners (Inside-Outside circles and acting out work wonderfully!). For example:

•Pencil: write, draw, twirl, tap, erase, break, sharpen, scribble, print, shade

•Computer: print, copy, type, search, download, play, edit, file, save

•Towel: wipe, dry, clean, mop, wring, wash, dry, hang, use, share, spread

Word Relays: Students work in teams of 3–6. Each team moves to a corner of the room. Place a pile of content/unit-specific words in the center of the room. Next to the content words, place a second pile of combined conjunctions, prepositions, punctuation marks, and “double underline” cards (to indicate use of capital letters). Single representatives from each team select one word and return to his or her “base.” This process will continue until one of the teams successfully arranges collected words into a meaningful, correctly ordered sentence.
