Chapter 4: Schemes of Plunder

“The mob has made several demonstrations upon the gas houses which they seem very anxious to destroy in order that they may the better carry out their schemes of plunder under cover of the universal darkness that would follow such a catastrophe. Frequent threats were made yesterday that they should be burned last night, but the authorities early saw the importance of securing the safety of these establishments, and ample preparations have been made to repel any force that can be brought to bear against them. Still the riot has not been without serious effect in reference to the supply of gas, owing to large numbers of the workmen employed in the gas houses (under the influence of threats from the rioters or from some other cause) leaving their post.” – The New York Times, July 16, 1863
