Chapter 7

We left the town behind us, and the mood in the Hummer was a lot different than when we’d started. It was eerily quiet. It wasn’t until we turned onto I-75 and headed north to the next exit for Hwy 63 that anyone even spoke.

“I sure didn’t expect that to happen, Dave. The mayor seemed so happy to see us, and grateful for what we could offer. Then that snake reared up and tried to take us out. It makes a man wonder who he can trust, if anyone, and question if all of this is worth it. You know?” Apache paused. “Is there anyone left who we can trust?”

“Sure there is, Apache. Just look at the men from Speedwell and Oneida who instantly jumped in to help us fight in Oak Ridge. They didn’t fight and die, for any reason other than it was the right thing to do. Don’t get discouraged. All of this is worth it if we can get civilization back to where it once was, not where it was when the CME hit, but when people cared about their neighbors and their country. When people weren’t divided over everything. Not just the whole left versus right, Democrats versus Republicans crap, but right versus wrong.

“We need to get back to when being proud of being an American wasn’t considered some kind of Fascism or Racism. Where people were judged not by the color of their skin, or if they were straight or gay or transgender, but if they were good and moral. Where everyone didn’t seem to only be interested in what was in it for them, or what they could get for free from the government—meaning their fellow citizens, who obeyed the law and paid taxes that sucked them dry. There were days when politicians who had never worked a real job in their entire lives didn’t get rich off of the backs of hard-working people who worked two or three jobs just to feed and house their families.

“No, I believe it’s worth it. There will always be Judases and snakes-in-the-grass who would turn traitor on their towns and country in a second. We just have to weed them all out, brother,” I assured my old friend.

“Apache, the Holy Bible makes it very clear that, until the return of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, we will face evil like that,” Pastor Tim advised us. “Just keep reading your Bible and praying, brother. I pray every day that Jesus Christ will return soon, I believed it before, and I still do. Just keep your Faith. That goes for all of you.”

Charlie had been riding in the other Hummer with Jeff, but she had jumped into our Hummer back in LaFollette to use the heavy machine gun. It had been the closest of the two when she had gone outside to warn Apache and be ready in case there had been an ambush set up, as we suspected. Jeff had joined her, and the others had piled into the second Hummer.
