This article was added later, undoubtedly necessitated by the fact that women started to perform a role in politics. When it comes to long-time absence, somebody else is voted for that period.

New Article 57a:

In case of extended absence of councilors, a temporary replacement is elected by the members.

Article 58

The current Dutch Constitution states:

Each House shall examine the credentials of its newly appointed members and shall decide with due reference to rules to be established by Act of Parliament any disputes arising in connection with the credentials or the election.
