CHAPTER 9

“LEILA, LEILA! WHERE ARE YOU?” The sound came from the hall near Leila’s bedroom.

“What’s wrong?” Leila could hear Joan from the garden and ran inside to help her.

“It’s Azerom!” cried Joan. “I can’t wake him up! He is very hot, and he is shivering like I have never seen.”

“Samuel!” Leila shouted. “Get me some cold water from the well! Now! And some blankets!” Samuel raced to get some large bladders and then headed to the well.

Leila and Joan darted back down the hall, where Azerom lay on the floor. The baby was alone in the bedroom crying. Aleia came running behind them, wanting to know what to do to help. “Take the baby out of here!” Leila instructed. Aleia complied and went out to the hallway. She stood there trying to calm the child, staying close to see what was happening.

Underneath the bandages Leila could see that what she feared was happening. The beating and the cuts from being whipped had become infected. There were too many cuts on Azerom’s back, and his blood was not able to circulate through his body like it needed to. He was too weak from being starved and worked so hard. His injuries were just too much to recover from. Still, she had to try.

“Get the bandages off him, and let’s try to clear out the infections. While I do that, you need to soak the cloth in the cool water and put it on his head to take his temperature down.”

Joan was in shock and just stood there, frozen with fear.

“Joan, you can do this. All you need to do is put the cool water on the cloth and put it on his head. If you can bring down his temperature in his head, he might wake up. Do it now, sweetheart,” Leila repeated.

Joan slowly poured water onto the cloth. Then she put the cloth on his head. This caused the bandages to come off, revealing a large infection.

Joan stared at it.

“Just put the cold cloth on his head, dear. I will get to that in a moment,” said Leila as calmly as she could. “Start talking to him. He loves you, and maybe he will be able to hear you and wake up.”

Joan started crying. Feeling embarrassed, she put her mouth down to his ear and started to whisper as she continued to hold the cold, wet cloth on his head.

Leila started to clean out the infections on the biggest wounds. She decided to try to clear out the one on his head first. She saw that she would need more cloth and called to Aleia to get Samuel to help her.

“And get Elaina, if she is not sick!” Leila added.

After she removed all the dressings off him, she could smell how bad the infection was. She knew that Azerom was in grave danger of dying.

Azerom’s shaking grew less violent. He was moaning but not responding to anything they said. Leila wasn’t sure if the moaning was a good sign, but she continued to work.
