CHAPTER 15

THE PRODUCERS at News 24/7 cut Majedah’s interview with Patty Clark into five segments. By running a different segment each day, they managed to keep the interview alive for a week. Patty’s profile was raised markedly, and Majedah’s name recognition rose along with it.

Two days after the first segment aired, the 24/7 broadcast team gathered for the morning meeting, where they heard updates about Patty Clark’s candidacy. First, the social media team reported that Patty’s soundbite—“I’m the only candidate with balls”—was the number one .gif shared on the Internet. “We didn’t even have to write an algorithm to make it happen,” wondered the Silicon Valley wiz on the call. “People just keep sharing it on their own.”

This prompted a round of bawdy laughter from everyone in the conference room and on the call. “How crude,” they all exclaimed. “So not presidential.”

Next, the financing team reported that they were creating new, ostensibly right-wing non-profits daily and funneling money through them to help fund Patty’s campaign. So far, they had already added 10.2 million dollars to her war chest.

Then the pollsters reported their preliminary numbers; Patty had debuted with support from 36 percent of eligible Republican primary voters, versus 62 percent who intended to vote for Nelson. The campaign was off to a brilliant start.

When the call ended, Rosemary caught Majedah’s eye across the expanse of conference table and said in a loud voice, “Kudos to our humble Pool reporter, Majedah, for the amazing job she did with this interview. Congratulations, Majedah. You made a Wycksburg fry cook look like a viable presidential candidate to the nation’s wingnuts!” She clapped, and everyone joined in to cheer and applaud the gifted young journalist. Majedah acknowledged their adulation with a serene nod.

In her Upper West Side apartment the following evening, Majedah dined on a market bowl of thinly sliced rare soy steak, golden avocado, mango chutney, and scallions on a bed of ancient Ulu grains. She paused to sip her chilled Brooklyn distillery vodka and turn on the television. In the mood to gloat, she flipped to Eagle Eye News and sure enough, Roy Cader was crowing about having presidential candidate Patty Clark on his show right after the break.

“Playing catch-up, Cader?” smirked Majedah. “Sorry, only one journalist was granted the exclusive announcement interview.” She shoveled food into her mouth until the commercials ended and the segment began.

Roy Cader seemed genuinely excited to introduce his guest. “Joining Eagle Eye News tonight via satellite from her newly opened campaign headquarters in Wycksburg, Virginia, is Ms. Patty Clark. Ms. Clark, it’s great to have you with us again.”

The screen split between Roy and Patty. The candidate looked earthy and attractive in a soft, camel jersey sweater with a neckline just low enough to tease a hint of the swell of her breasts.

“Ha, what a throwback,” snickered Majedah. “No self-respecting woman looks feminine anymore, Patty.”

But Patty’s appearance seemed to be charming Roy Cader as she smiled and said, “Thanks, Roy. It’s good to be back on Eagle Eye.
