@AnonUser1: OMG! The flatmate is dead. This cannot be a coincidence. I refuse to believe it. #MollyMonroe

I practically run home, shame setting a fire beneath my feet. I need to be back indoors, shut away in a place where I can process these memories.

I’m crying with frustration by the time I get back to the flat. As soon as I walk through the door, I can sense I’m not alone. For a tiny fragment of a second, I expect Posey to walk out of her bedroom, laughing like it’s all been some elaborate joke. But that doesn’t happen. Obviously. There are definitely sounds coming from her room though and when I poke my head around the door, I see two women – a blonde and a brunette – hard at work, cleaning.

‘What the hell?’ I’m shouting. Which I know is rude. But why are there two women in my dead best friend’s bedroom, cleaning what could be a crime scene? And I need to be alone. I’ve got so much I need to process. Why are they here? Why are they fucking here? ‘Why are you here? What are you doing?’

The blonde woman, who looks to be in her early forties, smiles at me as if I hadn’t just yelled at her so loudly she dropped her duster.

‘Oh hello, love,’ she says in a strong East London accent. In fact, it’s so East London, it sounds as if she’s putting it on. Like she’s a bit-part in EastEnders. ‘You must be Molly. Jesse said you might be here.’

‘What are you doing?’ I ask again as if it’s not obvious enough what they’re doing. They’re even wearing T-shirts with ‘Keeley’s Kleaning’ emblazoned on the front. But I still want that clarification.

‘Just giving the place a deep clean, hun.’ The dark-haired woman speaks now. ‘Jesse said it was fine to come in. He said he’d spoken to you.’

‘Well, he definitely hasn’t,’ I huff.

‘Don’t worry,’ says the blonde. ‘We’re almost done anyway, just need to run the hoover round and we’ll be out of your hair.’ She smiles again. I feel like I’m being gaslit.

I want to rip the Dyson out of her hands, but she said they’re nearly finished. Have I really been gone that long? I stare at them as they continue to clean the last bits of Posey away before heading back out of the front door. This time I storm to the door at the side of the building that leads to the second-floor flat. I hammer on it, unrelenting, until a dishevelled Jesse opens up. His hair looks like he’s brushed it with a balloon and he’s wearing grey joggers and a greying T-shirt.

‘What is it, Molly?’ he says. His voice is weary rather than aggressive. He pulls his left hand over his face, his right holding the door open.

‘What do you mean what?!’ I’m shrill and ear-bleedy.

Jesse blinks slowly. ‘What do you want?’

‘Why are there two women cleaning Posey’s room? She’s not even been buried, Jesse, for fuck’s sake.
