In reality, these conditions are rarely met. In practice, we speak of fixed exchange rates when currencies can fluctuate marginally under the control of monetary authorities that define parity (fixed exchange rates defined in relation to a benchmark price that determines the conversion from one currency to another). This means that fluctuations are temporary and minimal and they alternate with periods where the exchange rate is fixed.

For our part, we will address the situation of fixed exchange rates (small and temporary fluctuation alternating with periods of a fixed exchange rate) and an exchange rate regime which is more or less controlled by monetary authorities of the country (‘flexible’ or ‘floating’ exchange rate).
