Chicago, Illinois
The next evening, the train began pulling into Chicago. The group was excited to be in the city. Everyone gathered around Marion, waiting for her next move. The Illinois Central train depot was right next to Lake Michigan and the business district. According to Marion, her ship was close.
“Let’s get something to eat first,” Roy suggested.
“Sure, where do you want to go?” David asked.
“There’s a café down the street,” Monica suggested.
“Can you track the ship from where we are?” Roy asked.
“Sure,” Marion agreed. “But let’s get off this street.”
Everyone was starving from the long train ride. Soon, everyone ordered and had begun discussing their next move. According to Marion, the ship had stopped moving and they were only a few blocks from its location.
“It seems that the railroad has a spur running into this section of town,” Marion advised as she continued checking her tracking device. “Let’s follow it to see where it leads.”
As the group continued following the spur, they rounded a corner and were surprised to see a sizeable contingent of soldiers guarding a warehouse. The tracks ran right up to and inside the building. It was built similarly to a small hangar and had two large doors that swung open. Marion had finally found her shuttle.
“Okay, everyone. This looks like the place,” Marion announced as she checked her tracking device. “It’s in there, but the trick is getting it out.”
“You can see better from over there,” David suggested as he pointed to an adjacent warehouse across the street.
“Let’s go, everyone,” Marion said.
Everyone followed David to check out the warehouse he had suggested. Inside were several old freight cars and other equipment, some old and some new.
As everyone walked around, Barry called out, “Hey, everyone, how about this?”
He was pointing to a set of stairs that led to the second story with several large windows opening toward the adjacent warehouse.
“You can see just about everything from up here,” Monica exclaimed in her high, squeaky voice.
“Not everything,” Marion replied. “I’ve got to get in there to see what they’ve done with my ship.”
“It looks like there’s a door toward the back yonder,” Roy observed. “Maybe you could enter there.”
“Good idea, Roy,” Marion praised. “Wait here ‘till I check it out.”
Marion went back down the steps and around the corner. While nobody was looking, she activated her cloaking device. She quietly edged toward the back door of the adjacent building. When she saw the soldiers looking the other way, she tried the door. It was open.
Inside, she saw two more soldiers standing in front of the railcar that was carrying her ship. The craft was sitting atop the railcar covered with a large tarpaulin with several belts holding it down. The building looked like it had been specially constructed just for this purpose.
Marion tried the belts, but they were so tight that she couldn’t budge them. She would have to cut them either with her knife or laser. Either way, it would be heard by the two soldiers.
Upon entering the other warehouse, she decloaked and went back up the stairs where the rest were waiting.
