Chapter Ten

“What was that on your wall?” Synnøve said as they hurried along the narrow corridor. The sketchpad quickly shrank and thickened into Natalie’s palm.

The station occupied two levels. The upper floor held private rooms, bathrooms and three common rooms. Below were the labs, the mess, storage, command room, other offices, and the garage.

“Just some stuff.” Natalie didn’t like talking about work in progress.

“Looked kind of creepy.”

“Why the rush?” Natalie said, trying to ignore Synnøve’s comment. “What’s the problem?”

“Something out at the lake.”

“We saw you,” Natalie said.

They reached the stairwell. Synnøve took the steps two at a time, her running shoes making barely a sound. Natalie felt like an uncoordinated elephant as she thumped down after.

In the lower corridor, Synnøve stopped at one of the small storage cupboards. She pulled a blue fabric day pack from a narrow shelf. From one of the drawers below she grabbed some water flasks and lunch packs.

“We’re going out for a long time?”

“Did you eat yet?”

“I was... not really.” Natalie had let herself become caught up in the new art piece. The snackbar still lay unopened on the desk.

“Exactly.” Synnøve threw her a smile. “I’ve seen you do this before.”

“Do what?”

“Forget to eat. Beats me how anyone can skip a meal. Anyway, you can eat on the road.” Another smile. “Figuratively. It’s not really a road so much.”

“What is it?”

“You’ll see.”
