Chapter 10

Atiko had been right. Rodrigo did an excellent job and, over the next few days, Elliot found little room for advancement in what appeared to be an effective, competently organized dig. So, he did the only thing he could to add value. He grabbed a shovel, went into the trenches and started digging. The men were surprised to say the least. But those surprises didn’t last long.

A day or two later, they brought him a cold beer during their break and started to show him pictures of their families, while trying to discuss various matters of little importance with him in broken English. Soccer was the primary topic, which was ironic, because he was probably the one British bloke who didn’t even support a team. He played along, using the little knowledge he had to communicate. Sometimes, he saw Atiko watch him as he laughed with them, and he saw this look that was all too familiar. A part of her enjoyed seeing him like this; admired his ability to accept almost anyone in the world as his equal, and part of her was jealous, because she knew this wall she had built around herself might protect her, but it would keep everyone out eventually.

A week later, Rodrigo stumbled out of the forest; his leg bleeding, his eyes rolling and collapsing to the soft forest floor.

“Get the professor!” Elliot shouted, leaping from his trench and running over, where four men already knelt next to his trembling body. Foam was bubbling out of his mouth. His leg was bleeding so badly, the blood seeped onto the floor. Elliot ripped his belt from his trousers and fashioned a torniquet around the upper leg to stem the bleeding, closing it as tight as he could. They had to stop flow of blood, or out here he would soon be beyond saving.

Atiko charged into the midst holding the red first-aid kit, falling to her knees next to her foreman.

“Inject him with every antidote and antihistamine we have, and the cortisone,” Elliot said. “We got no idea what he’s having, so we need to take the shotgun approach.”

Atiko nodded and started getting syringes out of the pack and ramming them into his arm with little hesitation. Her cold-blooded nature always made her effective in such situations.

“Rodrigo, Rod, come on, open your eyes. Open them! Stay with us!” Elliot gave him gentle slaps to the face and the man’s eyes opened reluctantly. “Yes, that’s my man. Stay with us.” Elliot nodded as two other men with a stretcher approached.

“We get him to my tent,” Elliot said, knowing only he and the two ladies had gotten their own tents, while the rest of them had to share. The men lifted Rodrigo the second Atiko had the last syringe emptied into him. As he was carried away, Elliot stared at his blood-covered hands. He needed to clean himself. The smell of blood got you kinds of attention out here you didn’t want.
