FOURTEEN

I

t was still the middle of the night in the Region we translocated to, which was more than helpful considering the CTL brought us directly in the center of what seemed to be a huge town square. This must have been the marketplace where Aiden and the rest of his team picked up supplies. I could imagine that during the day it would teem with people, but for now, it was deserted.

Even though no one seemed to be around, Aiden guided me towards one of the tall buildings standing at the edge of the square. We ducked down into a large doorway, both crouching down to avoid being seen. The town square was surrounded by buildings of all shapes and sizes, including a huge church, bell-tower and all, with steps leading up to it. A stone fountain bubbled in the center, drowning out our voices for others to hear but also making it harder for us to hear if anyone was approaching.

“What now?” I whispered. He knew this place better than I did, but not by much.

“We need to find somewhere to lie low for a while,” he answered.

“And then what?” My voice rose with the panic bubbling in my chest. “How are we going to get back?”

“I don’t know if we can go back…”

I stared at him. I knew he was right, but what could I say? I had to get back to Mom and Simeon; I had to make sure they were all right. But I also knew Aiden couldn’t come with me, that the Regionnaires would find me, and I’d be sent to Processing. If I had to choose between living on the run with Aiden, my Mirror Soul, and being with my family but having to be Processed, which would I choose?

I swallowed the thought back down, doing my best to focus on the here and now. We had to make sure we were hidden from sight. That was the first step. It was even colder here than in Nordlys, and I shivered. Aiden put his arm around me.

“We should find somewhere warmer than this at least,” he said.

We stood up, my legs once more protesting with burning and aching muscles, and skirted around the edge of the town square, staying in the shadow of the buildings until we reached the steps up to the church.

“There are rooms inside the church that aren’t used much,” Aiden said. “We can hide in one of those until we can figure out what to do.”

“What if someone in the church sees us?”

“They’re compassionate people, maybe they won’t ask questions.”

I was doubtful but decided to leave him with his optimistic thought rather than destroying it with my realism. We ran up the steps and slowly opened the heavy wooden door at the front of the church building. I kept my back to his, keeping a look out as he tried to open the door with minimal creaking, and we slipped through the small gap he had made.

As Aiden tried to close the door quietly once more, I looked around inside the church.
