Magical Friendships

What does magic look like in a friendship?

To answer that question, I thought back to conversations I had with Smokey Robinson about his friendship with Berry Gordy. Talk about a magic friendship! Smokey Robinson took the time to give me the history of Motown and the vision he and Berry Gordy had back in Detroit to build this historic music label. When Smokey told Berry he wanted to be more than just talent, Berry took him under his wing and taught Smokey how to be an executive and an owner. Their resulting partnership literally changed the world of music. After that conversation, I felt more magical myself. I had talked to a man who had touched the magic, had lived the magic, and now he had sprinkled some magic on me.

Magical friendships can transform your life. When you have those kinds of friends, they download the Miracle Mentality into your brain. If you have access to people in your life who already have the Miracle Mentality, do all that you can to cultivate those friendships—just as Smokey opened up to Berry.

While we know many of our friends aren’t prepared to move from the mundane to the magical, by all means you should try to be a source of motivation for them. Pull as many as you can along the way as you begin to transform your life. Just don’t expect everyone to follow along. You may need to let go of those who resist you—or at least temper your expectations. Call them up on occasion, have a great time with them, but protect your dreams from those who will try to destroy them out of insecurity or envy.

In the Bible, Jesus had clearly defined levels to his friendships, which I use in my coaching to teach about the power of partnerships. Of course, the highest level was the one he had with his Father. The next level was his bond with three of his disciples, Peter, James, and John, the last two known as the sons of thunder. Next was the group of twelve disciples, which included Peter, James, and John. After the twelve came the group called the seventy. And last was the multitude of five hundred.

To God, his Father, Jesus told everything. Peter, James, and John were his closest confidants, so he shared a lot with them. He told much to the disciples, but not as much as to the three. Peter, James, and John were his ride-or-dies. In the Bible when he is about to do something powerful, he takes Peter, James, and John with him while he instructs the other nine to stay back. To the seventy, Jesus mostly talks in parables, not revealing too much of his inner thoughts. To the five hundred, he only spoke in parables. A parable is defined as a rhyme or riddle. He didn’t reveal everything to all of his followers because the Bible says only a fool tells his whole heart, casting their pearls before swine, which isn’t the most flattering description of the multitudes.
