ELMER SMITH (1930). One of four players named Smith on the 1930 Millers (the others being Earl, Ernie, and Hal), 37-year-old Elmer showed Minneapolis fans he still had plenty of life in his bat by hitting 16 home runs in 84 games and batting .332 while roaming the outfield in 60. Smith, from Erie County, Ohio, began his professional career at the age of 18 playing for the Adrian (Michigan) Yeggs. In addition to 10 years spent in the minors, during which he batted .307, Smith’s record included 10 seasons in the majors with a career batting average of .276.
