Braye Harbour
From the centre of St Anneâs itâs just a few minutesâ walk down the hill to Braye Harbour y [map] and the great sandy sweep of Braye Bay. Protecting the beach and harbour is the massive Braye Breakwater, often pounded by heavy seas (walkers along the wall should be aware of sudden swamping by breaking waves). When the French began constructing a naval harbour at Cherbourg, alarm bells rang in the Admiralty, and the British government suddenly decided it was urgent to create two breakwaters to protect ships at Braye, as well as on Guernsey and Jersey. The intention was to convert Braye harbour into a huge naval base. But only the western wall was built, completed in 1847. Battered by massive waves, part of the breakwater was abandoned and now lies submerged beneath the waves.
Flying to Alderney
From Guernsey the easiest, although not the cheapest, way to get to Alderney is to hop across by plane. It takes just 20 minutes and costs around £80â120 return. Aurigny Air Services (www.aurigny.com) operate a daily service to Alderney with their 19-seat aircraft. Alderney Airport, opened in 1935, was the first officially recognised airport of the Channel Islands. The small Terminal was built in the 1960s and has changed little over the years. Ferries to Alderney from Guernsey are very limited. Manche Iles Express (www.manche-iles-express.com) operates a high-speed ferry at weekends from April to September, the Little Ferry Company (www.thelittleferrycompany.com) is a seasonal inter-island ferry running twice daily and the slower Lady Maris II (www.ladymaris2alderney.com) only runs on Thursdays.
