CHAPTER 29

Friday, August 7—4:00 p.m.

The phone rang only once before Kane answered it. The caller ID read Stellan. “Yeah. Wha’cha got?”

Still over at Amon’s place, Stellan answered, “Nothing yet.”

“No sign of Amon?”

“No, he hasn’t come by yet. I went through the apartment, though. Not a lot in here. But I did come across something interesting.”

“Oh yeah? What’s that?”

“The kid has a bracelet with some hieroglyphs on it. Looks like real silver.”

“Actually,” Kane said, “I saw that thing. I didn’t think it was all that important, though. Why? Do you think it’s something we should look into? I figured he just stole it. With his job, it’d be easy enough for him to do.”

“Maybe. But it just seems out of character for someone like him to steal anything. His work file gave him high marks for integrity. Plus the thing has such weird writing on it.”

“Hmm. Alright. Well, just stay there and keep me posted. I’ll talk to you again at five.”

“Yep, talk to you then.”

In his room at the Marriott, Kane pondered the significance of the bracelet but soon forgot all about it.
