Chapter Sixteen

The week is busy. I go to the University twice for modelling, although I don’t tell Mike. I am surprised on two accounts: firstly, that I’m doing something Mike disapproves of, and secondly, that I don’t care if I bump into Randy Landy. This is highly likely even though I am working in the other teacher’s class. Mike leaves early, returns late and makes no more sexual advances toward me. I don’t care. Really, I don’t. Normally, Mike’s reappearance has me spinning because I try to please him by making an effort with homemaking and how I look.

As I hang his clothes in the wardrobe and fold his t-shirts into the drawer, I know this time will be different. The slow crawl of the menopause has shifted a part of my brain. Maybe this marker into the last phase of one’s life is a wake-up call. This is it. Time is running out, and I must do as I want. Say what I think. Be myself. If Mike is going to stay this time, there will need to be changes. I need answers. As soon as I can get Mike to have a conversation, I’m going to lay some ground rules for this marriage.

The rain has eased on Friday, and I walk with Ink into Foxbeck village. I have done the grocery shop online, so I’m all ready for the big family roast on Sunday, but I would like a small gift for the twins.

Janice, the shop owner, is putting up a Christmas tree in the window when I arrive, and everything is in disarray. ‘Oh, Lilly, hi. How are you?’ She went to school with Belinda.

Ink is wagging her tail madly, and Janice gives her head a pat. ‘Love this dog. Is she a greyhound?’

The tree is decorated on one side, and I help her manoeuvre it into the window. ‘It’s the only way, or else you can’t get at it when it’s in place.’ We shuffle it as carefully as we can while all the decorations jiggle and shake.

‘I know you think it’s too early.’

Secretly I do. We’ve not had Halloween yet.

‘But it’s a big job, decorating the shop and getting out the seasonal stock. People don’t realise.’

She stands back to look at the huge tree now stuffed into the bay window. ‘This is a bad idea. It’s going to drop needles everywhere and be bald by December.’

‘What about putting it into a bucket so it can be watered? I’ve heard that’s supposed to help.’

Janice straightens her back. She’s tall. My Belinda is short, like me, and the two of them always looked quite comical. The tallest and the shortest kids in the school.

‘Yes! That’s the answer. Can you watch the shop while I find one out the back?’

I stand there holding the tree while Ink, lead trailing behind her, gives the little shop a good sniff. From the window, I can see the village green and a few people coming out of the pub. They stand and chat.
