Neurogen Bionics

Corbin’s arm twisting had pissed off a lot of powerful people. He’d gotten progressively aggressive and, Tig heard, had moved on to threats to get his brother’s case closed. Fortunately for Reed and Nat, one of those people was Judge Stojanovic. The son of Serbian immigrants, he’d clawed himself up the judicial ladder with grit, brains, and ruthlessness. He hated soft, rich men who used their money to influence what he called, the ‘Purity of Law.’ Reed pushed that angle during the meeting in chambers.

The PT7 solvent used by special forces found at Petraeus’s apartment, the official though heavily redacted military file Tig was able to get, and Reed’s account of the high-speed firefight at the college, all convinced Judge Stojanovic to grant narrow warrants for Slater’s apartment and his office at Neurogen Bionics. Stressing that he believed another victim was in the killer’s sights, Reed got any common areas of the Neurogen building thrown in. He hoped that was enough.

Tig and Reed wanted to hit both places at once. Nat and a SWAT team went to Slater’s apartment and Reed drove with a couple of patrol cars following to Neurogen Bionics. Reed needed something that would get him closer to Corbin. That kind of technology didn’t happen under the radar. Someone at Neurogen had to design that device, those wires, and whatever was in that injection. He doubted it was a jarhead like Slater, however well-trained he was to kill. Reed’s phone rang and Nat’s voice came through his earbud.

“The address to the apartment was fake,” she said, disappointment thick in her voice. He could hear people talking in the background. “A nice old couple just made me eat cookies I swear were as old as they were while they told me they’ve lived there for nearly a decade. It was never a valid address. And get this, Imani just sent me a peek at Slater’s financials. Slater hasn’t spent money in Seattle for three years. His employment records show him leaving Neurogen Bionics at the same time.”

“I guess I should ask him how he just happened to be right next to Corbin when we showed up.”

A car door slammed on her end. “You think he’ll be there?”

“I just got off the phone with the receptionist. According to her, Slater walked out the door after we left that first meeting and hasn’t been back.” Reed turned into the parking area near Neurogen Bionics. “I’ll take another run at Corbin. Maybe scare him a little. He’s either involved or he knows something.”

Nat shouted something but it was muffled. The car horn honked and then she was back. “I’m on my way to you with an evidence team. I’ll be there in twenty if traffic holds.”

As he drove closer to the building to park, he had to navigate around two heavy-duty work trucks, an excavator, and a bulldozer. Giant wood spools of cable sat atop a flatbed truck in front of the entrance. He scanned the parking lot. It was empty save for a few cars at the far end and a blue and white security car.
