Chapter 30
“Grace! Grace! Joe, open up!”
Cullen pounded on the front door of the Wellington mansion. When no one answered, he kicked in the lead crystal door with one mighty blow.
“Gage, go around back. Check to see if she's there. Grace! Grace!” Cullen called, rushing up the stairs two at a time then methodically looking in every room. The large house was sanitized--no food in the refrigerator or dirty dishes in the sink. No trash or personal items.
The only trace of Grace Fabrizio was her perfume that still hung in the air in the upstairs bedroom.
Cullen stood in the bedroom and wondered why he felt such a loss. He knew she had somehow seen the photos and had run again. It was his fault. At this point, she could be anywhere.
“Care to share with me what is going on?” Gage waited for the explanation he figured was not forthcoming. Yet, he still had to ask.
“Not now,” Cullen said sharply.
“Well, at least I’m not disappointed. What next?” Gage knew Cullen was already in military mode. He had seen it many times in other McKinnon men of a different era. Even though it had been several years since he had seen Nic, Connor, Rafe and the rest, Gage was not totally rusty in the art of war, or of time travel.
“We'll start at the beginning, the shelter. Come on. I have a warrant to serve.”
After calling in a security team to secure the house, Cullen pulled up in front of Open Arms. He flashed his badge then pushed past the guard who was still on duty.
“We have a warrant to search this place so stand down, Officer.” Cullen’s demeanor was such nobody in his right mind would even think of arguing.
“Sure, go ahead. But most of the residents are still sleeping. It's early. I suggest you go easy or you will be front page news again for scaring women and children.”
Taking advice from this young man was not something Cullen wanted to do in his current state of mind.
“When I want advice from a rookie I'll ask my cousin, the duke."
“Yes, sir, I’m just trying to help. Just figured it would not be a great career move for you. What are we looking for? Drugs?”
“No. Her.” Cullen pointed to the photo of Grace that the young officer was looking at when they walked in. It seemed everyone read that damn rag of a paper. His hope was there was one person in this world who did not. However, he could not take such a chance, not with Grace’s life hanging in the balance because of him.
“Her? The babe? I can tell you she has not been here. I would have definitely noticed if someone who looked like her walked in. God, she is hot!”
“Yeah," Cullen said. She was hot, but he didn't want other men talking about her.
Just about the time he felt his resolve slipping to not plant this punk in the front yard, Laurie walked into the center along with the morning cooks.
