One of the most popular traditions in China is inviting a business associate to dinner. It doesn’t matter whether you are a visitor from a far country or a regular foreigner in their local or city business circles — building or cementing a business relationship is achieved through out-of-business-hours social activities such as dinners, or more usually eight-course or more banquets (eight is lucky, nine is for ‘the emperor’, but some banquets can run to at least twenty dishes). If you arrive a little early, your Chinese hosts will usually be there and there will be an opportunity for social chat and introductions. As with everything in China, there are certain cultural niceties to observe.
