Kate stood in her room, her back pressed to the door. She concentrated on bringing her heartbeat under control. Breathing in slowly and exhaling. Slowly in and slowly out. All the questions she had been unable to ask earlier crowded her mind with nowhere to go. Tommy had been so very pale and taken ill so suddenly. And those things he had said. How was she to see for him and why had his eyes grown so large and strange? He was unwell. That was the explanation. There was no sense to be found in what he said as there was no sense in it at all. Thankfully another person trained in medicine was coming to look after him.

Peeling herself away from the door, Kate undressed quickly. She piled her clothes on the chair, pulled on her nightdress, and crawled under the covers. Checking her alarm clock, she turned out the light and burrowed further into the sheets and eiderdown. She tried to distract her thoughts by planning the costumes and what she would make first in the morning. But all thoughts of the costumes were pushed aside by the face of the child in the mirror and the scene that had played out in the stable when Elliot had looked at her as though she had lost her mind. Who were those people that she had seen? The two women. And the child. The child… the very thought of his face made her shudder. He had looked so evil. There was no other word for it. She’d had enough of a memory of his reflection when she made her way to her room to make sure that the door along the corridor was closed and locked and covered by the curtain. And she had never been more reassured to hear anything as she was when she heard Rosemary’s gentle snoring coming from the room next door.

Kate closed her eyes. She took hold of her St Christopher and held it tight as she fell into a restless sleep.
