Chapter Twenty-one
Dani supported Laurel’s weight as they staggered down the stairs. Corpseflies buzzed about them, nipping and seeking entrance into their flesh, but the maid had re-secured her mask and the main swarm remained upstairs for the moment. The sound of even more pods bursting open followed them until the women nearly collapsed on the main floor.
Laurel breathed hard as Dani tried to formulate a plan. Her mind felt aflame as she considered and discarded half a dozen courses of action. Her power surged within her, wanting release, wanting to lash through the house in a wave of destruction. She clamped down and refused to let it take control.
The best thing would be to get Laurel out of the house and safe in the van, and then come back to retrieve Lucy and Hardy. The fact that the other Cleaners hadn’t emerged from the basement made her dread what she’d find down there.
Turning the corner to the main hall, Dani stumbled to a halt. The front door had been replaced by a black pane of glass. The obsidian mirror blended with the walls the same as in the master bedroom. No getting out of the house the usual way.
They backtracked to the living room, swatting flies down by the dozens with each swipe. She halted on seeing the windows—including the one they’d broken on entry—also having been sealed by the black glass. A dash through the kitchen revealed the sliding glass doors to the patio transformed as well, and she didn’t doubt every other potential exit had been similarly blocked.
Trapped. And she’d dropped her squeegee in the panic upstairs. The sound of the growing corpsefly swarm made her balk at running to retrieve it. The upper level appeared engulfed by a green roiling cloud. The buzzing ground at her ears while the stink of manure clogged her sinuses.
Maybe Malawer had some secret escape tunnel in the basement. Dani could only hope. They couldn’t leave without Lucy and Hardy anyways.
“We’ve got to get to the basement,” she shouted over the noise of the flies.
Laurel nodded. She kept one hand pressed to her stomach, and Dani tried not to imagine what she might be feeling with the corpsefly crawling around in there.
When Dani headed for the basement stairs, however, hundreds of corpseflies swept into the kitchen and engulfed them. Their mandibles clicked and cut. Their legs scratched and both women dropped to their knees by the sink to try and get below the chaos.
Her and Laurel’s screams were lost in the cacophony, and she needed no other encouragement to loose the storm she’d been building. The energies swept out of her, leaving her stunned and breathless.
Water spouted from the sink and hit the ceiling. Lights bulbs sizzled and popped, and jagged sparks shot out of every electrical socket. The water spread, mingled with the electrical arcs and, within moments, formed black clouds lit from within by lightning strikes.
Thunder rolled through the kitchen and dining room. Dani pushed Laurel to the floor as the storm broke.
