CHAPTER 19
YEAR 18
THE GZORAZKIANS came onto the ship with their tranquilizer probes, and they zapped everybody in their path. They swept past Deidre Hundt, Melanie Lorne, and George McGraw and went straight for four new victims: Albert Morris, Anita Lund, Emma Greene, and Hannah Montgomery. The hostages climbed unwillingly into space suits, and off they went into the waiting vehicles.
When they returned, they had no memory of what had befallen them. Not one of them had any cuts or bruises, or any hint of injury whatsoever. However, a week later, Anita Lund, Emma Greene, and Hannah Montgomery began to sense something strange stirring in their bellies. A quick examination by Elijah Perkins-Borges revealed that all three women were pregnant.
Every few days, the Gzorazkians whisked the pregnant women away to their laboratories, where they were given routine shots and checkups and ultrasounds. Before returning to the ship, the women were forced to swallow thick green pills that smelled of manure.
The fetuses developed quickly, much more quickly than was normal. When Elijah and his medical staff examined the women a fortnight later, they could see little heads and noses and fingers and could easily identify the sexes of the babies. When Emma Greene had a miscarriage in her third week, the infant was almost fully developed, with little glassy eyes and a mop of brown hair on his head.
In the fourth week, Anita Lund gave birth to a healthy baby boy, eight pounds, four ounces. She named him Ryan Hollander after the boy she had kissed at Craighead Caverns in her youth.
A few days later Hannah Montgomery gave birth to Mitchell Xavier Montgomery, nine pounds, seven ounces.
Both Ryan Hollander and Mitchell Xavier Montgomery would inherit the stout frame and droopy eyes of their biological father, Albert Morris, manager of Clean Space Janitorial Services.
How, Elijah wondered, could the fetuses develop so quickly? What were the Gzorazkians doing to these women?
The answer: somewhere in the green pills that smelled like horseshit was something that caused the womenâs reproductive processes to speed up. That something was a chemical compound called xeenolux.
Shortly after the birth of Ryan Hollander and Mitchell Xavier Montgomery, the Gzorazkians took Albert Morris, Emma Greene, Anita Lund, and Hannah Montgomery away again, and when they came back, Albertâs testes were drained and the womenâs fallopian tubes were swimming with his spermatozoa yet again.
