“Thanks for not shooting me. I hate when that happens. Hurts like a bitch every single time.”

The man continued on, leaving Dave just standing there, bewildered, which made him wake up. Awake? Asleep? It didn’t really matter one way or the other. The dream left him just as confused and bewildered awake. Eventually, Dave got back to sleep.

That next morning, Dave got up and headed off to work, and one of the last things he did before he walked out of the house was put his new pocket watch in his pants pocket. Maybe it was just that he was feeling a little off from the past couple of days, but all the way to work, he kept seeing random stuff that screamed ‘family.’ A billboard with a grandfather reading a story to two kids. A billboard featuring a mother baking cookies with her child. An ad on the side on the bus showing a grandmother on a phone, talking to a child. And then, as he sat at a traffic light, he watched an older man walking down the sidewalk holding one child’s hand while a smaller child rode astride his shoulders. It felt like when you had a splinter in your foot, and you can’t get it out, but it hasn’t worked its’ way out on its’ own yet, either. It smarted a bit, at worst, and was an annoyance, at best. On the commute home from work, he was turning over the odd dream in his head. His life seemed like it was spinning out of control and getting weirder by the day. Journey, huh? Not liking it so far.
