THE PRACTICE
THREE STEPS: 1. CHOOSE YOUR SEAT. 2. BE STILL. 3. FOCUS.
Choose your seat. Select a comfortable seated position. You may even wish to sit against the wall or in a chair. It is important that the spine be perpendicular to the Earth. If you are sitting on the floor, elevate the seat by sitting on a pillow or folded blanket. You must be able to sit still for the duration of the practice, so don’t choose a position that is too challenging.
Begin by placing your feet, legs, and hips in the most comfortable position available. Relax. Sit easily. Feel your seat as it connects to the floor—sit down. Surrender to the terrestrial force by feeling the force of gravity drawing your seat downward. As you surrender to this downward force you will automatically feel an uplifting force moving through your spine and torso. This is the force of levitation operating within you. As you sit down you will be lifted up. Relax your hands and place them comfortably on your knees, palms up or down or in your lap. If your hands are in your lap, place your active hand on top of your other hand, with both palms up. Relax your arms and shoulders. Feel your neck soften and lengthen. Relax your face. Gently close your eyes. Allow your chin to be level with the floor as you release your jaw. Let your tongue float inside your mouth. Relax lips, cheeks, nose, eyes, inside your nose and behind your eyes, eyebrows, and forehead. Allow the frontal part of your brain to slip back slightly into the skull. Relax your scalp. Scan the body over and make any adjustments you feel you need to make so that you have the most comfortable seat and then . . .
