CHAPTER FIVE
THIS TIME SIENNA DIDNâT ASK, she demanded, âWho was that?â
âMy mother-in-law.â Mitchâs expression still unreadable. âFormer mother-in-law.â
âOh.â
âShe blames me for Deenaâs death.â
Sienna had heard this before from her boss. Still, the words struck her hard.
Just minutes ago, Mitch had been flirting with her, kissing her, asking her out on a date. Now, he was acting as if he couldnât wait to get out here all because of his former mother-in-lawâs silent judgment.
Blinking back tears â okay, yes, his reaction hurt her â she started toward the pen and Cody â only to come to a grinding halt when the young girl Cody was talking to exclaimed loudly, âYou have funny ears,â and burst into giggles.
Her poor, sweet sonâs bright smile died and his gaze dropped to the ground.
Sienna heart constricted into a tight knot, for Cody and for what had transpired between her and Mitch. So much for her receiving the best of Christmas gifts.
âSienna. Wait.â
Ignoring Mitch, she skirted around the pen. Right now, her son needed her. That trumped anything and everything.
He followed after her. âLook, I screwed up.â
âI get it,â she replied through gritted teeth. âYou were embarrassed to be seen with me.â
âThatâs not true. I swear. Seeing her...I was taken by surprise.â
âReally?â She let her tone convey her opinion of his lame excuse.
Reaching Cody, she pulled him into a fierce embrace. For once, he didnât object to her mothering. âCome on, sweetie. Letâs go home.â
âI need to clean up the poop.â
âItâs all right. Mr. Lunsford canââ
He twisted away from her and retrieved the scoop shovel, wearing his stubborn streak like a banner. âI promised.â
âOkay.â
She let him be. Clearly, he needed to deal with his hurt in his own way.
Mitch materialized beside her. âLet me explain.â
âDonât bother. Itâs not as if thereâs anything between us.â
The mask heâd been wearing slipped away, and she glimpsed flashes of pain and regret in his eyes. âThere could be. Iâd like there to be. Itâs just that... Maybe this was too soon.â
âMaybe it was.â
âIf you knew what happenedââ
âI do know,â she said. âYour story is still being gossiped about today. Believe me, my boss was more than eager to recount every tragic detail about the couple who used to own my house.â
âI led you on. I was wrong.â
Sienna became aware they were being watched and lowered her voice. âNot sure you led me on. Weâre not in a relationship. But you shouldnât have started something you had no intention of finishing. That wasnât fair to meâ
âYou have a right to be angry,â he admitted.
It was then she realized sheâd overreacted. Hadnât she been warning herself repeatedly she wasnât interested in a romantic relationship? That helping her son recover from his terrible ordeal and adjusting to his new school were her priorities?
One little kiss didnât change that. In most certainly shouldnât change that.
âNow Iâm sorry,â she said.
âSienna.â
âLike you said, youâre still grappling with your grief and guilt and not ready to date. And, frankly, neither am I. The timingâs not good for either of us.
