When we were ordered to put down three giants, three brothers up in Lebanon, I asked Enhe if she wanted to come with the army or stay behind. She wanted to come. The first night on the march, several of us were in the baggage train, visiting our women or just fooling around. I picked out one man in my troop who was both a bully and a coward. The world was better off without him. I told Enhe to flirt with him. She did so willingly enough, giggling and batting her long black eyelashes. As soon as he touched her, I walked over and broke his neck. Now the other men would leave Enhe alone.

There were fifty fighting men in our troop, led by Sergeant Lugal, plus about as many camp followers and hangers-on. The king and his long-haired bosom buddy came with us. They were the pair I had seen wrestling in the town square. The king's name was Gil, and his friend was called Enki. Sergeant Lugal told the new recruits that Enki had been raised by animals. It made a good campfire story.

We forded the Euphrates at Hit. At Mari we cut overland toward the Inland Sea.

The giants we were looking for hadn't done anybody any harm, as best I could tell. One was named Gog and another Magog. I forget the name of the third. Gil just wanted to make a reputation for himself by killing a giant. As is almost always the case, we did most of the fighting, and the king took all the credit.

I got to know the king pretty well on the march. Moody bastard. He'd wake up in the middle of the night screaming, and when the guard turned out to help him, he wouldn't tell us what his problem was. Enki would hold him and kiss him and stroke his hair until he fell asleep. Gil and Enki, what a pair!
