Chapter 6

Zach

I was working at the garage on Thursday evening the first time Anna took the plunge and reached out to me via social media. She used the messenger feature to send me this gem.

Anna: This is me interacting with you on social media.

I found myself grinning at my phone like an idiot because I could imagine Anna fretting about what she was going to say, finally settling on the most basic fact.

Me: This is me responding.

She didn’t type anything back. That was it? Maybe she figured she only had to do the bare minimum. Make a show of reaching out to me…

Me: This is me making a flirty joke over social media.

There was a pause.

Anna: This is me LOLing.

I started to laugh and then turned it into a cough when some of my buddies turned to look at me. Shoving the phone back in my pocket, I tried to get back to work. I tried to focus, I really did. But approximately every three seconds I found myself pulling out my phone to see if she’d sent anything else.

Nope. Radio silence.

“Are we keeping you from something, Stoker?” The manager of the body shop shouted out to me from the office in the back.

I tucked the phone away. “No, sir.”

But on my next break, I couldn’t resist. I went out behind the shop and called her. Anna answered on the third ring. “Hi, Zach.”

“Hey.” I smiled. No idea why, really. Maybe it was the sound of her voice, or the way she said my name, or the way she didn’t do the whole “Hello? Oh hey, Zach!” routine as if she didn’t know it was me calling. And now she seemed content to sit in silence on her end.

“I don’t like texting,” I said.

“Oh. Me neither.” I could hear her shifting, like she was settling.

I tried not to imagine her getting comfortable under her covers in bed and failed. Great. Now I had an image of a scantily-clad Anna seared into my brain.

“I just figured it would look good to text,” she said, her tone creeping toward defensive. “You know…for the app.”

“Yeah, I figured.” I stared down at the ground. Why was I even calling? We both knew the app wouldn’t track phone calls…

Actually, I didn’t know that.

Man, this app was freakin’ creepy. Why would anyone willingly install this if they weren’t using it to get a good grade?

“So…” Anna finally said, drawing out the word and making me laugh.

“About the game tomorrow,” I started.

“Yes, right. The game.” Was it my imagination or did she sound relieved that I was calling to discuss logistics?

“I think I should pick you up,” I said.

The silence was deafening and I tried not to be offended. I turned my gaze up to the twilight sky and waited her out. It wasn’t like I could blame her for not wanting me to run into her parents.

“Um, I have to do this family dinner thing,” she said. “I wouldn’t want to make you late.”

I stood there in silence for a second, letting her listen to how ridiculous that excuse was.
