Chapter 16

Death, surreal permanence

There are two closed-off compartments on the inside of the expansive safe. Each door is ornately carved mahogany wood with the name “Armitage” engraved in red letters in the middle of each.

I crouch in front of it and open the right side door first. A blast of chilly air hits me like this side is refrigerated. I step around the safe to the back, to see where the electrical plug is located. No such plug exists, though.

Is this magic? I push back around to the front. Inside the magically cooled airtight compartment, I find a surplus of blood bags. The chill makes sense. My mouth waters on sight as the sweet aroma fills my nostrils. I count the bags that neatly line the compartment but stop at fifty.

Is this where Beulah is getting the blood?

In the other closed section, old photo albums are stacked on top of each other. Why would they keep these in a safe?

From the top of the stack, I pull out one of the books. The cover is red leather and plastic sheeting clings to both sides. A thin layer of dust wisps into the air. I cover my mouth and pull the book open.

I don’t recognize any of the people in the first few pictures. Then I see a picture of Tricky and her mother. Why would they have a picture of them in this album?

My mother and Tricky’s mother weren’t close. I made the assumption that Tricky’s unhinged mouth was the reason they never got close, but I can’t say for sure. Tricky didn’t seem to care that when my mom was sending out invitations to parties, Josh’s mom always received them but not her own. Tricky came to any and every gathering we had.

My parents were loving and supportive. They never tried to choose our friends. Good or bad, it was our decision. And as different as we are, I loved Tricky the first day we met and always will. And as far as I knew, my mother loved her, too, crazy and all.

I continue to flip through page after page of pictures of other people I know. Everyone I know is in this album.

“What the hell’s taking you so long?” Katerina asks, marching into the closet. “What’s that?” She peers around me to see into the safe. Her lips move and I can’t hear or tell what she’s saying but I know she’s not trying to communicate with me. She’s in a private conversation with herself, again.

“Nothing. I um… I found this safe. Don’t worry about it. Let’s go.” I scramble to my feet and start toward her, but she hasn’t moved.

“Come on, we should go,” I say.

“Why are you keeping things from me?” she says with her hands on her hips.

I sigh. “I’m not intentionally doing that. I’m trying to figure out things a little first.”

“That’s the thing, I’m supposed to help you do that. That’s my job.”

“I understand. I–I…” I rub my hand across my face. “I don’t want to put you in danger.
