Maddox stood, and so did Meta.
âWhat wonderfully fast thinking,â Maddox said, as he enveloped Meta in a hug.
She hugged him back and beamed up at him.
Maddox let go of her and looked around. âWeâre not wearing proper attire for this place,â Maddox said, having on his swim trunks. Meta had her beautiful bikini. Maybe what he needed was to find a cove and make love to his wife one last time. He shook his head. No, that was defeatist thinking. They could get back to Victory, somehow.
âAll right,â Maddox said, âIâm open to suggestions.â
âI donât want to pick up a rake this time,â Meta said. âI wish Iâd kept the lance so I could shove it up Omeganâs aperture.â
Maddox chuckled in agreement. Then he spotted two individuals raking. They didnât look their way. Maddox wondered if they should head toward the two.
âLetâs do something other than just standing around,â Meta said. âThe ground is a little hot for my feet. What about you?â
âYeah,â Maddox said, glancing at the sky. âWe should hurry. I donât know how much time we have, but I have a sense of urgency.â
âIs this your intuitive sense speaking?â
âThat, and look, the star is climbing into the sky. It was always hottest here when the star was highest.â
Meta shaded her eyes against the sunlight and nodded. The brilliant, pink, gem star was half way up already.
Maddox and Meta hurried toward the other two, who wore metallic garments and wide-brimmed hats and raked with determination. Theyâd created many piles of rubies, just as Meta and Maddox had done earlier.
As they closed the distance, Maddox realized he recognized Ludendorff and Riker. He hailed them.
Neither looked up.
âItâs likely,â Maddox told Meta, âtheyâve been raking the entire time. That means they didnât resist whatever mentally forces them to rake.â
âI broke the hypnosis, or whatever it was. Was that because of you?â
Maddox shrugged.
Meta rounded on him. âHusband, I want you to be honest with me. You know I can handle it.â
Maddox sighed and nodded. âLikely, my proximity had something to do with your breaking free.â
âThen letâs hope your proximity can do the same for them.â Meta became thoughtful. âWill the four of us have to climb the scooper to leave this place?â
âLetâs take one step at a time. Thatâs the best bet in a situation like this.â
âAs you wish,â Meta said. âProceed, please.â
Maddox grinned, and, hand in hand, they approached Riker and Ludendorff.
âProfessor,â Maddox said, âisnât it time to take a break?â
Ludendorff glanced up once, his eyes lingering on Meta in her yellow bikini, before returning to his raking.
âWe know the old goat is lecherous in the extreme,â Maddox said. âWhy donât you sway seductively past him? That might break the hypnosis long enough for me to reason with him.â
âThatâs not a proper thing for a wife to do, not with her husband present, and certainly even worse if heâs not.â
âFair enough,â Maddox said. âHold my hand then while we walk past him.â
In such a manner, Meta paraded before Ludendorff. Maddox looked back.
