THE FOUR ELEMENTS OF EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION
In order to connect with and better understand others in complicated situations, it’s important and helpful to first understand ourselves and our own motives. Here, the four steps of NVC provide a helpful tool to do so in everyday situations.
1 My observation: What is objectively happening? What can you really observe here, putting aside all interpretation from your side? For instance: “I didn’t receive an answer from you to my email from the day before yesterday.”
2 My feeling: How do you feel about this? What feelings arise in you? For example: “I’m frustrated and angry.”
3 My needs: Which needs of yours are affected by this? For instance: “I need to feel respected by others and want to make good use of my time.”
4 My request: What would you like to request from the other person? For example: “In the future, would you be willing to try answering emails by the end of the business day?”
Hopefully, it should be pretty easy to see why these four steps are helpful and what purpose they each serve. Unfortunately, implementing them in your day-to-day life is much harder. That’s why, in the workshop, we also provide some exercises to help internalize and practice these four steps. These exercises are especially helpful in making some of the key distinctions needed to properly use NVC: separating observations from interpretations, feelings from masked judgments, strategies from needs, and demands from requests.
