“So you remember nothing?” he said. The man in the lab coat sat on a stool next to the bed. His white hair was cropped close on the sides and entirely absent on top. He wore gold-rimmed glasses and stared at Nick over the top of them.

“I remember being in a warehouse,” he said, “and being attacked.”

The man in the lab coat nodded. “But you don’t remember leaving the warehouse or being found?”

Nick shook his head.

“Well, that’s understandable. You received quite a significant head injury. It’s one reason we don’t want you moving around until we can be sure you are fully recovered.”

Nick was still flat on the bed and, he had to admit, the position felt more comfortable than standing. He had been in and out of consciousness all day and found it difficult to keep a train of thought. The only thing he could focus on was the children. The thought of what might have happened to them made him feel sick to his stomach.

“You were crawling through the snow when our recon. team found you. About a mile away from the warehouse.”

Nick couldn’t remember anything about the journey he had supposedly taken, but the cuts and grazes that covered his face and hands seemed to prove it had happened.

“I was with some other people,” he said.

“We didn’t see any other people,” said the man. Nick thought he was probably a doctor.

“Two of them were children,” he said, the words stuck in his throat. “The other was the man who attacked me.”

“I see,” said the doctor. Then he was silent for a while before standing. “Well, I’m not sure what to tell you. We didn’t see anyone else there. You should be well enough to leave the medical wing in a few days. Perhaps then you can speak to the people who found you.”

“Can’t I speak to them now?” he said, although he didn’t feel as if he had the energy to do much more than lie there.

“I think it’s better if you take the time to recover first,” said the doctor.

Nick could barely keep his eyes open, so had to admit it was probably better to wait.
