1. The sick bay consisted of a barrack block with a criminal in charge. He had doctors and medical orderlies from among the prisoners at his disposal. Only those with a high temperature were admitted. If the thermometer did not quickly reach a high enough temperature the sick were sent back. The chance or recovery was very limited. The medication was inadequate and the treatment was mostly rough or even ruthless. Dr. Zabranny was reputed to be especially cruel. Immediately after the war he was condemned to life-long imprisonment by the Polish Court for his inhumane behaviour.

2. My Hungarian-speaking friend survived and at the time of writing (1967) was Chairman of the Concentration Camp Invalid Association in Tel Aviv.

3. In the course of research for this book, the author discovered that Hermann had remained behind until the Russians arrived in the mistaken belief that they would treat with sympathy and understanding anyone who opposed or was oppressed by the Nazi regime. He was probably seized by front-line troops, but there remained no trace of him.

4. At the time the author wrote this book – 1967.
