The citywide summer music festival called “Fêtes de la Musique” is held on the summer solstice. The word “fête” (“festival”) sounds like the word “faites” (“make”)-so the double entendre of the festival’s name is true to the festival’s goal, which is for everyone everywhere to make music. On the longest day of the year, the city erupts into a free concert: an opera at Le Palais Garnier, jazz in Montmartre, hip–hop at Bercy, a small Yiddish band in a bar, a violin duo on a balcony. If you are lucky, you might even see a group of elementary school children singing “La Marseillaise.”
