Quaint Hydra Island is a popular tourist destination. With no vehicular traffic, the islanders rely on donkeys to haul their goods up narrow streets to the hilltops and over the barren ridges to remote villages. Named for the springs that once flowed to its surface, it is now an arid island. Earthquakes are thought to have ruptured the underground water routes.

Most of the population is centered at Hydra Town, but about 8 miles (13 kilometers) eastward over rough trails are several sequestered monasteries and the lighthouse. The sentinel stands on a remote point known as Zourva, high above a cave-riddled shore. The beacon is intended to warn vessels away from the eastern edge of the Peloponnese and point the way to Athens.
