CHAPTER 30
Mattâs eyes narrowed. âShit, are you going to faint?â
âNo.â Relief shivered through her at the concern in his voice. âI just canât believe thatâs what you thought! Like, all this time, thatâs what you were thinking about me? I never cheated on you, Matt.â
âDaisy, please donât!â
âNo! I donât get why you thought Iâd cheat on you! On us!â
Matt rubbed the back of his neck. âI donât know what to believe, anymore. I thought youâd hooked up with James that night, so I decided I was better off staying in New York after the internship. The next thing I heard, you were with him, so ...â
She wished for one moment that she hadnât pushed him for the truth, that he hadnât suddenly, horrifically ripped the bandage off the wound.
âI met James a few months after you left, Matt.â She managed to keep her voice even. âAnd, after that, it was ages before we started dating.â
Mattâs face seemed to drain of colour.
Helplessly, Daisy looked down at her tea, wishing it was a glass of wine. Ah yes, Daisy, alcohol: the short-term solution to all your problems.
âMatt, why didnât you just ask me straight out? Because some stupid rumours about a party was a pretty flimsy excuse to end a five-year relationship.â
His eyes slid away. âIt wasnât just that. There were a few things going on at the time. To be honest, I was in a pretty bad place.â
For a moment, she wished sheâd just left on time. That sheâd been happy to leave the pain of that text â of that whole time â buried deeply. That sheâd never wanted to find out the truth.
âYou broke up by text, Matt! You could have talked to me!â Furiously, she blinked back tears. âNone of this makes any sense. We were together five years, and you thought Iâd sleep with someone else because you went away for one summer? You believed some stupid rumour â â She wanted to yell that heâd never deserved her for believing that.
âIâm really sorry, Daisy.â Matt scrubbed his hands over his face. âIf I could go back ...â
For a while, they sat in silence, as Daisy tried to process everything.
âYou know what I thought when you agreed to hire me?â she said finally. âThat this was your way of saying sorry, of looking for closure.â
âI did want closure. I missed you, Daisy. Iâve thought about you a lot since I left.â
Something still seemed off. Or maybe Rosie was right, and she was looking for signs that just werenât there.
âI missed you too, Matt.â
This was such a mess. She was with James. Even if theyâd grown apart. But being alone like this with Matt was dangerous, especially now they both knew the truth. Knowing heâd left because of a misunderstanding was a head wreck. She should have tried harder at the time to find out what was wrong. It had been as much her fault as his: sheâd just let him go. Panic surged through her, and she pushed herself shakily to her feet.
