Chapter Twenty one
Crystal ball
Matt and I stood on the bridge. He had his arm around my shoulders. I could tell something was wrong. He moved as if he was in pain. There had also been signs of a struggle at the salvage yard. I was nervous about asking him though. âSo how was your date with Kita?â I asked him, trying to strike up a conversation. Seraseia and him had gone to Earth for some holiday. I had stayed behind to help Gail with wedding preparations. Kara had gone back to work at the hospital. âIt was fun. I wish you had come along with us. Quino was asking about you. And Carly was pretty upset. She wanted to show you her costume.â I sighed and leaned on the rail. âGail and I were busy with wedding stuff. You know how it is.â He snorted and looked at me. âMore like the two of you got tangled up in those Hilosian silk sheets. Canât say that I blame you.â I felt my face turn red. âYouâre one to talk. We heard Kita and you the other morning. Really? On the table?â It was his turn to blush. âWell donât you normally eat at the table. And itâs not like we had sex in the kitchen again. We went to the basement.â The two of us shared a laugh. His smile faded and he let out a long sigh. âKarsay, do you regret meeting me?â His question caught me off guard. âNo! Matt, whatâs going on? You know you can tell me anything.â
He smiled and stared off into the distance.
âAre you sure you want to marry me?â I was sure something was wrong then. Matt was absolutely thrilled that we were getting married. He would spend hours helping us with decorations and the guest list.
âMatt!â I said feeling both worried and hurt. âWhatâs wrong with you? What happened? Are you leaving me?â I asked him quickly. He faced me and I saw his eyes were full of tears.
âI just donât want you to get hurt.â I was no longer worried. I was terrified something had happened. He and Serasiea had come home earlier that day. He seemed fine.
He had complained about the snow but that was normal. We had spent the evening playing swords & starscapes. He was a bit depressed that Kita and Gail werenât there. He was protective of all of us. Everything had seemed fine at bedtime as well. But now he was acting weird.
âMatt, look at me.â I said putting my hand on his cheek. âI have been in love with you since the second we met. I have wanted nothing more than to marry you. You know you can tell me anything. Please tell me what it is. If Iâve done something please tell me. Is it because we havenât had sex?â I asked tearfully. He shook his head and took my hand in his. âBaby, itâs nothing like that!â I could tell he was scared and that was something that scared me.
