CHAPTER 24

Using her powers on the kraals, Irret raced across Morvene and into Brumwall. The second kraal died beneath her as she’d left Morvene and entered Brumwall. She’d mounted her last kraal, and casting her spell over it, pushed her dark powers into the hapless animal to force it to move faster than its muscles could ever propel it.

She was within hours of reaching Macnak, and the Free Blades waiting there, when a crave landed on her arm. A message was attached to its left leg.

She held the kraal back, removed the writing cloth, and read the words twice over. The boat her danglore had seen Ailish, the Free Blade, and the Dark Master go aboard, had never reached Macnak.

She dismounted and reread the note. Not possible! she told herself. My Master makes no mistakes.

Realizing something unexpected had happened, Irret knew she must contact Fasil, but not here. She looked around, took in a calming breath, and exhaled slowly. She was too far from where Fasil was for her thoughts to reach him. She needed to be in a place of power where she could create the spell he’d taught her.

The crave had flown to a branch above her. She took out a writing cloth, and set down a message for Anit, whom she had sent to Llawnroc. The message was simple: Anit was to meet her, two days hence, at the border of Brumwall and Llawnroc.

She called a second unsuspecting crave to her. Controlling its small mind, she attached a message to the Free Blades waiting for her. If she was right, no matter where the queen bitch had disappeared to, she would have to go through Welkold to reach the Frozen Mountains. Her Free Blades would be there, as would she and Anit.

Smiling to herself, she mounted the kraal, and rode east as fast as she could make the kraal move. She had to speak with her Master!

Ailish, Jalil, and Nomar left the clearing just before sunrise. They rode east, unaware of Irret heading in the same direction, but on a different road.

Ailish was leading them to a place only she knew. She had discovered it when she was twelve, and had been visiting her uncle in Fainhall. Her cousin had taken her close to the border where the five western domains, Kashold, Fainhall, Welkold, Lokinhold, and Freemorn met. There, her cousin took her to a large cave in the mountainous hills just inside of Fainhall’s border.

It was a special place, her cousin Harraf said, a place only she knew about. Now it was a place only Ailish knew. Her cousin had died during the last ghazi war. What was hidden there, she knew, could never be spoken of to anyone, for deep within the cave was another opening—one that led to a place of the ancients.

Five days after leaving the boat they reached the forest by the border of the five domains. They’d seen few people on their way as they’d stayed off the main routes of travel within the domains.
