COLBIE

That kiss was a lot of things.

And so were his confessions. Jake has been through far more than I could have imagined.

He’s leading me into his house now, and I wonder how he’s feeling. I’m not the one with a child to think about. Is he worried Robbie saw us?

We step into the kitchen at the same time Robbie comes from the living room. His feet shuffle over the hardwood floor like Jiminy walking around Honeybee.

Robbie stops and stares at me, confused. “What are you doing here?” His hair sticks up in the back. It’s adorable how slow he is to wake up. Does he get that from his dad? For some reason I don’t see Jake as being a person who hits the snooze button. He probably leaps out of bed every morning, ready to face the day.

I’m having a hard time focusing on Robbie’s question because now I’m thinking about Jake.

Jake’s hands…lips…other parts…especially the part I felt pushing against the front of his sweats like it was dying to get to me.

Forbidden. That’s what he’d called me. I’m not, technically, but I understand what he means.

“Colbie brought over coffee and some sweet treats,” Jake answers for me when it becomes clear I’m not capable of it. “They’re outside.”

I push my lips together to suppress a smile, and Jake smirks. He must know what I’m thinking. He turns his body away from Robbie, in my full line of sight, and adjusts himself again.

Even that one small movement is too much for me to handle, and my thighs are aching again, like they were outside when his lips were on mine and I ground my ass into his lap.

I need to go home. Immediately. I can’t be having inappropriate thoughts about Jake while Robbie stands two feet away from me.

“Thanks, Colbie,” Robbie says, rushing outside.

I get control of myself and say, “You bet, Robbie.”

Jake chuckles as Robbie’s dark hair and matching pajama-clad body disappears from view. I look up at him, and find his gaze is already burning into me.

“Damn,” he says under his breath.

“Such is life when you’re a single parent, huh?”

He lifts his shoulders once, dropping them right back down. “I suppose. I’ve never brought a woman here. I wasn’t expecting…that.”

“Me neither.” I look down at myself. “Obviously. Look what I’m wearing.” I grab the ends of my hair. “Look at my hair.”

“I’m looking at everything about you, and I like it all. Makeup, no makeup. Hair messy, hair brushed. Clothes”—he grins—“no clothes.”

I poke him in the chest, the way I did in the hallway at Caruso’s. “You haven’t seen me without clothes.”

He closes his eyes and tips his face to the ceiling. “No, but a man can dream.”

Jake insists on walking me out. I lean out the back door to say goodbye to Robbie first. He’s happily chewing a donut, feet swinging back and forth under his chair.

“I’ll see you later, Robbie.” I wave.

Instead of a farewell, he asks, “Are you good at math?”

“Yes,” I answer. Jake steps into the open door beside me, his chest brushing my shoulder.
