Chapter 7. A Drunken Preacher and His Boys

God saved . . . Noah the eighth person, a preacher of righteousness.” II Pet. 2:4-5.

Noah was a preacher of Righteousness. God saved him. But he did not always practice what he preached, and on one occasion he acted wholly contrary to what would be expected of a saved man, a preacher of righteousness.

After the flood Noah became a husbandman. Everyone that had failed to believe his preaching was drowned in the flood. There was not much preaching then to be done, so he became a farmer.

He planted a vineyard. He drank of the wine, and became drunken.

“And he drank of the wine and was drunken: and he was uncovered within his tent. And Ham, the father of Canaan, saw the nakedness of his father, and told his two brethren without. And Shem and Japheth took a garment, and laid it upon both their shoulders, and went backward and covered the nakedness of their father; and their faces were backward, and they saw not their father’s nakedness. And Noah awoke from his wine, and knew what his younger son had done unto him. And he said, Cursed be Canaan; a servant of servants shall he be unto his brethren.” Gen. 9:2-25.

The church is full of sons like Ham. They glory in shame. Many preachers have the spirit of Ham. Their children and their congregations are cursed by their sin.

When, O when, will we learn the Spirit of Christ? The church can never come to the “Knowledge of Christ” until they recognize the Body of Christ, and with real repentance confess that we are members one of another.

Jesus said, “Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.”

Countless thousands of Christians, and many preachers, are away from God, and out of the fellowship of his body, because when they sinned, the church did not have enough love and grace to restore them.

This great revival of the ingathering is a message of hope to all. God is willing and waiting to forgive and receive many prodigals whose elder, and self-righteous, brethren are unwilling to restore them.

“Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted. Bear ye one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.” Gal. 6:1-2.

The Law of Christ is the Law of Love. But this has not been the rule. On some occasions if a Brother is a valued member of the church or organization his fault is glossed over, and covered for the church or organization’s sake. And many times the record of it is held over the brother’s head, like blackmail.

This is not true Christianity. A brother at fault must be restored because he is a brother, in Christ.

Many churches, ministers, and organizations, have used scandal, whispering campaigns, and slander, against other Christians and ministers as their stock in trade for carrying on competitive warfare.
