The Future

“What just happened?” asked Doctor Manda, staring in bewilderment at Robinson. “What did you do to Spears?”

“I’m treating her,” said Robinson, an edge of confusion in his voice. “Captain Spears will be restored at the conclusion of her treatment.”

The body was completely gone, and the white sheet that had covered it lay on the ground. “Restored? Her body, it’s—it’s completely bloody vanished!”

“Oh,” said Robinson, as though considering some forgotten detail. “Yes, the body was reclaimed by the nanobots.”

She knew that. Could see that. It was as clear as day. Doctor Manda stammered, trying to find a fitting response to this insanity.

“What’s going on?” demanded Sammy behind her.

“Good question,” she said over her shoulder, turning back to Robinson. “Tell me. Now. What did you do with Spears?”

Robinson seemed unable to answer her question properly. “I initiated medical rejuvenation procedure 677-Bravo. My sensor readings indicate that so far the early stages of this process have been completed successfully.”

“Describe these stages,” Doctor Manda hissed. “Tell me everything about rejuvenation procedure 66-whatever.”

“Very well,” said Robinson, his voice suddenly changing, as though the artificial man was reading from some kind of document she couldn’t see. “Medical rejuvenation procedure 667-Bravo is an advanced form of procedure 659-Yankee, allowing the imaging of tissue which has suffered significant decay, which in turn is a modification of procedure 599-Golf, which originally allowed imaging from necrotic tissue. The process takes place in four distinct stages. In the first stage, the cognition of the patient is imaged and stored as a default neural-network in the database of the attending program. Imaging includes mental state and memories approximately ten seconds before brain death.

“In the second stage, the body of the patient is disposed of in an appropriate manner; disposal by incineration is recommended if nanobot decomposition engines are unavailable, alternatively, burial is a suitable, if archaic, option.

“In the third stage, a new body is grown in a standard issue cloning vat. In a situation where the new body needs to be aged in order to match the original, artificial DNA oxidation is employed to artificially advance the age of the new body to an approximate level of the original, along with mitochondrial infusions taken from the standard sample. If mitochondrial material is not available, the process is halted. A medical laser approximates any detected scarring or injuries except those that caused the fatality of course, although the default setting is to avoid recreating any damage, reflecting cosmetic changes only—especially if one wishes to create the deception of surviving a serious wound that was, in reality, lethal. Accordingly, user discretion is advised. Further, the default selection is for accelerated growth times, but standard or delayed times can be selected if desired, up to a maximum of one hundred and forty years.”

Manda blinked. Behind her, the medical team watched as well, clearly uncertain what to say. Robinson continued robotically.

“In the fourth stage, the imaged cognition is implanted into the cloned body. Patient aftercare is an incredibly important part of this process, as they are typically confused, frustrated, and alarmed when awoken.
