That had been the longest hour of her life, Jess thought, as she said her goodbyes to everyone at the door, and thanked people for coming. She wondered if theyâd all been as conscious of the strained atmosphere after Faye, Sarah and Susan had left. If so, everyone had made a huge effort for her and Carmelâs sake, even if they werenât keen to hang around afterward.
To Jessâs surprise, Ãna was one of the last to leave.
âI know Iâve created some problems between you and your family, Jess.â Her hand fluttered to the pearls at her throat. âIâm so sorry. Maybe I can explain the situation to the Feely-Martins.â
Jess was tempted to ask her to do just that. But Ãna looked so worried she felt a bit sorry for her. And it still wouldnât fix what she had done to her cousins.
âItâs fine, weâd better not mess with it anymore.â Jess gave her a hug. âI should have just come clean with the girls at the start. Iâll figure it out.â
Ãna appeared to be at a complete loss. âI donât know how we managed to pick a hotel that doesnât allow after-dinner guests at a wedding, even if there is a limit on numbers.â
Jess decided not to remind her that the church and hotel had been her suggestions.
âWell, thank you for a lovely afternoon, Carmel. Weâll see you at the wedding.â Ãna clasped Carmelâs hands briefly in her own.
Jess felt a flash of respect for her as she watched her leave. It would have been easy for Ãna to make her excuses today, and she wouldnât have blamed her if sheâd left early after what happened.
She closed the door and went back into the living room, where her mother, Zoe and Kate were clearing up. Suddenly, all she wanted was to be alone with her own family.
âThanks, Kate, weâve got this, honestly.â
Carmel caught Jessâs eye before turning to Kate. âWe have a lot of leftover food. Will you come down to the kitchen to help me wrap some of it? I might give a few things in to Mrs McCarthy, and youâll take some cake and biscuits home for Luke, wonât you?â
Kate nodded and with downcast eyes followed Carmel downstairs.
Zoe rounded on Jess. âWhatâs up with her?â
Jess perched on the arm of the long sofa. âKate? She might be feeling under a bit of pressure because of David, Iâm not really sure. To be honest, I have bigger problems.â
Zoe found a clean glass and poured herself some warm Prosecco. âJess, this is your wedding. Just tell the hotel you need extra space. Full stop.â
âI tried that. The banqueting manager reminded me that itâs all they can fit in their room. It all comes down to insurance.â
Zoe pulled a face just as Kate stuck her head around the door.
âIâm off.â
Jess got up and went out to the hall. âHey, thanks again.â She moved to hug her, but Kate reached for the door instead.
âSee you Monday, Jess.â
Jess sagged against the door after she left.
