FORTUNATELY, THE SEER had passed out again. However many drugs Dukane had her on, it was obviously too many.

Of far more concern was my own heartbeat, pounding hard as I watched Dukane’s paramilitary hirelings fan out through the cavern, weapons at the ready. They wouldn’t dare hurt the Seer, but in my case, I bet their orders were shoot first and screw the Incarn consequences later. They moved in carefully measured steps. Very professional, except for jitters and tics in their body language revealing that they clearly did not want to be down here. I couldn’t blame them, but it worked to my advantage.

Especially as I peeked through the window of an empty vault.

We hid in an empty cage. Being unpowered, it was a simple matter to 4th my way into it, finding the inside as dark as black midnight. My only worry was if there was a Purple in this group who could see me and turn the power on. That would be extremely inconvenient, but I didn’t see any Purples…yet.

I saw something else.

The Tentacle Terror, T.T., tied up in the cables in the other cage…

He was looking at me through the cage.

The monster still lay trapped several dozen feet away…but I could see him. His body appeared transparently visible even through solid metal.

How in the hell? Prehler never told me about this.

He stared me down with those eyes that didn’t blink, wrapped up in so many mummy layers of reinforced steel cable that I could only guess what most of him looked like. Looking at him with the second sight, he radiated a dark red aura, pungent and thick, matching the ambient light. This wasn’t a Stygian.

This was worse.

Screw it. I figured those cables would hold him nice and tight or he would’ve escaped long ago. Meanwhile, Dukane’s team were about to pass by. As I hoped, they were too unnerved to look into the vaults themselves. I kept my head below the window just in case.

T.T. kept watching me.

Which planet did you jump from to land on this mudball, anyway? Are you happy with how it turned out?

Alien eyes narrowed, catching my sight and daring me to blink. I didn’t like that at all. Maybe I should have picked the vault on the left. Whatever, the sooner I got out of here the better. I rose to sneak a peek through the glass, seeing Dukane’s men moving deeper into the cavern and long past me. From my position I saw no one watching my door and no one covering the rear. Time to bug out.

Picking up the Seer, I entered the 4th. Being inside bedrock, I couldn’t jump panes to escape this cavern, but I could still jump panes within the cavern. The vault door vanished into dimensional nothingness as I took slow steps back onto the rocky floor. My plan was to stay in the 4th until I got to the elevators. No big deal, until a thought tickled my head.

I’d never swapped panes underground before.

Prehler said the earth existed in four dimensions…“kinda.
