Chapter 15

It took an entire thirty minutes for the remnants of the green dragon’s breath to fade away. Even then a slight tinge of burnt flesh hung in the air, despite the fact that the corroded corpses of the monsters had long since vanished.

Obviously it wasn’t a nice stench, but better than their noses burning off.

Fortunately, loot drops were shielded from harm under the Tower’s protective barriers as they waited for the successful raiders to claim their prize.

“One piece of gear? Really?” Kramer was the first to comment on the seemingly low number of rewards for their efforts. “And it looks like rubbish, too. Who’d wear a cloak that looks so scruffy?”

“Utility over style. I would have thought you of all people would understand that.” John ignored Kramer’s glare as he moved next to the reward area. “I have an idea what it might be. Let me check it out.”

The instant his hand brushed against the glimmering force field, John received a blast of information on the contents. Of course that included the basic details of the equipment item, but he only glanced at that for a moment before he turned his attention to the real prize.

Materials.

Elderwood, Magic-drenched metals, and Mana Crystals of various sizes and shapes. Enough to boost a smaller Guild up into the stratosphere if it was used efficiently, but most of it was within the reach of a behemoth like Heaven’s Shield.

Apart from one piece in particular.

“There you are.” John laid his palm flat as a small, twisted rock dropped out of thin air atop his hand. After inspecting it closely, he carefully inserted it into his inventory before he pulled out the ragged cloak.

[Ruined Cloak of the Skeleton King]

A piece of equipment wielded by the first Skeleton King, this item has awaited its new owner for centuries. Time has not been kind, but the power hidden within its damaged fabric still remains to this day, ready to be claimed by one willing to take on the duties of the Skeleton King.

Increases Wisdom, Intelligence, and Acuity. Drains barrier prior to internal energies when casting curses.

Skeleton King - Large increase in affinity toward Skeletons. Corrupts summoning spells. Limited duration, stacking effect.

Overall, the stats were decent, but the main benefit of the item was super-specific. At a glance it seemed a little weak, and possibly even entirely useless. Not many classes could summon helpers, and those that did usually tried to keep theirs around for as long as possible to grow their power.

But John knew the perfect way to utilize such a limited effect.

“These are the stats.” He flicked the details of the Ruined Cloak of the Skeleton King over to the others, along with a rundown of the other materials rewarded by the tower. “If no one else is interested I’d like to take this. The materials can be sent on to the Guild vault directly.”

“That’s a bit creepy.” Nima glanced at the destroyed pile of skeleton remains in revulsion. The others nodded in unison after they read over the description.
