CHAPTER 48

We stare at four men clad in white and cobalt cloaks. Their weapons trained on us don’t waver in the guards’ hands. None of us, even the intoxicated mage, dares to move.

How did they find us?

Fla’mma-infused flashlights blind me. “Let me through,” a self-important male voice commands. The four men part to let Overseer Irvine through.

The ma’har examines the group with a satisfied expression. “I knew that injecting trackers into the refugees would come in handy.” He gestures toward the young man. “He led us straight here.”

Royal Elementalist Mage totters on his feet, almost tripping the young man. “I am not with these two”—he swallows, then continues—“I have no idea what is going on . . .” His voice trails off, and he hiccup-burps again, looking green in the face.

“You’re lucky to be under diplomatic protection, Royal Mage. Although being drunk is not something the ma’ha will appreciate. I’ll deal with you later,” Irvine says with disgust, then turns toward us. “These two are not so fortunate. You are under arrest. Give up your leader, and I may grant you a quick death.”

With mind racing, I take a step back, only to have part of the ground give under my foot. Rocks fall into the gaping abyss.

The young rebel, cursing, shoves Ragnald forward, right into the overseer, then turns and jumps over the rickety fence.

The ground shakes and Fearghas barrels through the guards.

Irvine jumps out of my horse’s way, pushing the mage into the hands of one of the guards, and slips on the muddy ground, falling on his face.

I climb onto Fearghas’s back, holding him by his reins as he stomps around, agitated with nowhere to go.

The guard grasping the inebriated mage stumbles behind Fearghas, who kicks out with his clawed feet, propelling both the guard and the mage into the rickety fence.

For a moment it seems as if the fence will hold their combined weight, but with a loud cracking sound, it gives way.

The guard and the mage plummet off the cliff.

“No!” I stare after them as Fearghas dances under me. No one pays us any attention, but I cannot make myself escape.

Buckets of fishguts! I turn Fearghas toward the broken fence and urge him to move.

Fearghas leaps off the cliff.
