In 2004, the public criticized National Basketball Association small forward Latrell Sprewell for making an offhand comment during contract negotiations with the Minnesota Timberwolves. This is the same guy who had effectively been kicked off of his former team, the Golden State Warriors, for grasping the neck of his coach, P. J. Carlesimo, after the coach had criticized his passing. Sprewell clutched the throat for several seconds until teammates rushed to intervene.37 In another incident, Sprewell threatened a teammate with a two-by-four and promised to retrieve a gun.38 Now on the Timberwolves, the small forward was nearing the end of the season without a contract in hand. The team offered him a three-year deal worth $21 million. But Latrell outright rejected the offer, calling it “insulting.”39 When asked about it, he had this to say:
