Evan

Chapter Ten

It seemed like the driveway stretched on forever and no matter how many steps he took, he would never reach the door.

“This is exciting, isn’t it?” His fiancée, Holly, said with a giggle as she lingered just a step behind him.

“Yeah,” he replied with less enthusiasm than she was expressing. He was glad that she wasn’t able to tell that he was sweating like crazy. How long had it been? Four years? He was trying to play it cool, but inside he was silently panicking about it.

Freya.

She had been on his mind constantly ever since Holly begged them to come home and visit everyone. It had been such a long time since he saw the girl he once considered his childhood friend, the girl he had left behind. What would she think when she saw him? Did she hate him? It was only right, and it was what he rightfully deserved.

At last, the long stretch was over as he reached the front door; he stood there for a few seconds, trying to gather his courage to ring the doorbell.

“Evan?” Holly spoke in a low voice, as she tilted her head around to look at him.

He rang the doorbell.

He heard someone yell inside, but he couldn’t make out whose voice it was. He shifted his weight as he waited for someone to answer the door, his mind going back and forth for what he will say.

He rang the doorbell again.

Now he was beginning to feel the sweat run down his face in anticipation for when the door finally was opened. He could sense Holly shifting with excitement beside him. She always got happy over small things like this; she was talking about it their whole trip here on the train. She was always curious about what his home town was like. He couldn’t help but turn his head and smile at her, despite his nervousness.

He impatiently rang the doorbell one last time.

The door swung opened and a young woman stood before them.

“Finally, I was beginning to think no one was home.”

“H-hi,” the girl before him spoke in a quiet voice. He gave her an odd look. It had been four years, but she had seemed to change quite a bit since the last time he had seen her.

“It’s not like you to be so quiet, Darla,” Evan said with a playful smirk. Although Darla and himself were about the same age, they were never that close, despite having a few classes together. He, however, used to like to tease her because of her serious attitude.

“Honey,” Holly spoke as she inched herself closer, indicating she would like to be introduced, wrapping herself around his arm.

Darla stepped back so that Evan and Holly could step inside the house.

“Wow, this place hasn’t changed at all,” he said as he looked around the room. It was very nogalistic and brought back fond memories of the days that he used to spend there.

“Freya,” another voice called from a distance, “was that him?”

Suddenly, Ms. Young, Freya, and Darla’s mother appeared before them from a hallway.
