Brendan awoke the next morning. He had no clothes, except those he had brought with him, and he tried to remember when the pope was supposed to put on the white robe. No matter, for this morning the Bishop of Rome would dress as the auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of St. Louis, Missouri.

The tense moments with the guards the previous morning came back to him when he left his room to seek out Cardinal Lindsay. A pair of Swiss Guards had accompanied Brendan to the room the prior evening, but it had not occurred to him that they would not move from his door during the night. He walked the short distance to Lindsay’s room and Lindsay greeted him at the door.

“Good morning, Holiness,” Lindsay said to him.

Brendan raised his hand, “Please, you are a father to me and I would like to remain Brendan to you.”

“Alright Brendan, but by what name will the world remember you.”

Brendan had guessed Lindsay would demand the new name. Like Simon the fisherman, the newest Vicar of Christ customarily took a new name to acknowledge his new place between heaven and earth. Brendan had been shaving just thirty minutes before when he realized he did not want a new name. He had first been called to the priesthood as Brendan and Brendan he would remain.

“Brendan,” he said.

“Brendan the First,” said Lindsay aloud, trying the sound in his mind and in his ear. “And the last, perhaps.”
