“The place you’ve tried to follow us to for the last few days—without success. [The brows of Weiss’s eyes rose.] This is a chance both to solve a mystery and win young Feingold’s soul.”

“And how do I win his soul?” Weiss said with another sardonic smile.

“You win simply by matching your sanity against my madness. You have faith in sanity, don’t you? You believe in a rational world, don’t you, Mr. Weiss?”

“And what if I do?” Weiss said in the same joking manner.

“Well, I believe in chaos and madness—and the malleability of the human soul. I believe that given a chance, most people will choose madness over reason. This is your chance to prove me wrong.”

Weiss laughed heartily then. “You’re good, Kain,” he said, nodding his head. “I can see how young Feingold got his head fucked up by you. But see, I don’t give a shit about philosophy—and I don’t let nobody fuck my head up. The only thing I really care about is getting paid—and that happens when I bring back this kid here. See, as you noted before, I’m armed, and unless you’ve totally fucked up this kid’s head, I think that if I point this gun at him, he’ll come with me.”

But Kain only laughed again. “Either you’re already mad, or you’re a fool, Mr. Weiss. Certainly you don’t propose to shoot young Feingold, here. That would preclude you from getting paid—which you stated before was your only motivation. So, obviously, the threat of violence is not going to suffice here. [Weiss looked unsure for the first time.] Moreover, even if you managed to get him away from me, you’d be taking back an enemy, Mr. Weiss. Are you going to handcuff him in the trunk while you drive? Obviously you haven’t given thought to everything. I’m offering you the chance for his soul : the opportunity to bring back a pacified mound of putty, ready either for your hand or the hands of his parents. I’m sure his parents would compensate you double if you managed to complete such a feat.”

Weiss was still looking at him suspiciously—and now with confusion and a certain amount of alarm. “And what do I have to do?”

“All you have to do is come with me—prove to me that reason is more powerful than madness.”

But Weiss’s instincts began to exert their force; and shaking his head, he blurted out: “You must be mad if you think I’m going anywhere with you!”

“I am mad,” Kain said, matter-of-factly. “I’ve never denied that. Come on, Mr. Weiss: the night is getting cold. And you still have the gun, don’t you. Certainly you still trust violence.”

“Damn right—and I trust getting paid even more!”

Kain smiled. “ . I am understanding you better, Mr. Weiss” he went on, in the same calm manner. He reached for his pockets then—

“Don’t move!”

“Relax, Mr. Weiss. I am unarmed.” And at that, he brought out a huge wad of $100 bills.

Weiss’s eyes bulged! The man stared, entranced : he had to shake his head to break the spell.
