Chapter 13
âOmens. Heâs afraid of omens.â
Clint Ellerbe decided the first thing he needed to do was to track whatever Parker Demarest what doing. Cammie said she should have the fellaâs computer this afternoon. In the meantime, he would start a deep study of the missing woman.
Devereâs report to Demarest showed she had not used a credit card in her name; she had not used her cell phone; she wasnât in jail or a hospital; her passport had not been used; and she had not packed extensively. Devere had entered her apartment, so Clint wouldnât do it unless he had to start down the same path Devere took. Mary Demarest, over a two month period before her disappearance, had withdrawn ninety thousand dollars in cash.
Clint had a great deal of information to work with, thanks to the Anderson Services toolkit. Mary Demarestâs social media accounts were still up, and Clint had her phone history. Clint thought maybe Devere hadnât looked closely enough. Clint planned to uncover as much information about Mary Demarest as he could. In her history, somewhere, there would be breadcrumbs to follow.
Debra came to Belâs office in the afternoon. Debra said, âWeâre caught up with the recordings. Well take another pass this evening. Sarge is going to drive around their place today â he rented a truck. He wanted to see it in the daytime. We have a few names, and weâve captured five phones so far. Weâll get the rest â we hope the texts will tell us more.â
She continued, âOne of the names is Peter Juric, he might be Novakâs second in command. Other than him and Novak and the German cop, the only other male name is for a Turk â they call him Rambo. The larger woman is Marta, the younger one is Ema. Thereâs something weird about Marta and Luka â we donât know exactly what, yet. She could be his wife, but weâre not sure. Sarge thinks sheâs his sister; there is a family resemblance. And the young woman is a slave, I guess. Lukaâs talking about selling her to the guy who sent him the German. And heâs having Marta fuck the dude to get a better price for Ema. They both seem to like the idea. This is fucked up.â
âThanks Debra,â Bel said, âIâm very glad Sarge is with us for a while.â
After Debra left, Bel took his big olâ round head in his huge hands and stared at the table top. There was an idea, a thought, in the back of his brain, tickling. All those religions â Luka is afraid of something. Those gods were meant to counter malign influences â malign to Novak, anyway. Novak thanks them for keeping him safe from â what? Everything or particular things? Bel opened his eyes and said, âOmens. Heâs afraid of omens.â
Baby and Toomuch went bonkers when Lucky and Skye came over. They were convinced the visitors were there to play with them. Lucky joined Bel on the deck. Bel
